Reaching Higher Policy Director Christina Pretorius shared insights on how NH schools are using federal relief funds as a panelist for the New Hampshire Fiscal Policy Institute’s webinar, ‘Leveraging COVID-19 Relief Funds to Support and Equitable and Inclusive Recovery’ last month.
‘There are a lot of really exciting things happening in the state and other states,” said Pretorius, who joined NHFPI Senior Policy Analyst Phil Sletten, Housing Action New Hampshire Director Elissa Margolin, and New Futures Kids Count Policy Director Rebecca Woitkowski for the June 9 webinar. In particular, NH schools have used COVID-19 relief funds to address student mental health and wellness, provide educational enrichment such as after-school programming, offer professional development, bolster support staff, and address teacher retention amid a workforce shortage, Pretorius explained. Nutrition is likely to be an area of focus in the coming months.
“There is an opportunity for the state to provide more funding to districts to sit down and think about what happens next in terms of providing safe and healthy meals for their students,” she said.
