MTSS-B training series designed to promote school-wide student wellness

NH MTSS-B Team Training 2018

The New Hampshire MTSS-B Collaborative is hosting a three-day team training on Multi-Tiered Systems of Support for Behavioral Health & Wellness (MTSS-B) for school leaders interested in establishing Tier 1 “Universal” systems in their learning communities at The Falls Event Center in Manchester, NH. The dates for the workshop are March 14, April 10, and May 1 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

From the MTSS-B Collaborative:

“Many New Hampshire schools continue to struggle with the complex social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students and staff alike. Failure to meet these needs not only affects academic achievement – it can also result in negative outcomes such as mental health crises, substance misuse, dropping out of school, risky sexual behavior, and violence.

“Addressing these needs has never more important and requires more than quick fixes and one-day workshops.

“The MTSS-B framework has been shown to improve student engagement, create school climates and cultures that are positive and inclusive of all students, and improve student academic and behavioral outcomes. This interactive, hands-on training is for school-level leadership teams that are ready to implement the evidence-based Multi-Tiered System of Support Framework for Student Wellness and Behavior (MTSS-B). Participants will focus on how to establish Tier 1 “Universal” systems. School teams will learn how to organize their learning community to include diverse school and community voice, create a positive school-wide system, align multiple efforts and resources and how to create a coherent, consistent, and positive environment for all students.”

This package also includes one day of additional in-person training, plus a half-day follow-up live webinar, for each participating school’s team leader or MTSS-B Coach. Register online at iod.unh.edu/events or download the event brochure here.

The New Hampshire MTSS-B Collaborative is a partnership between the NH Center for Effective Behavioral Interventions and Supports (NH CEBIS) at SERESC, Strafford Learning Center, and the Institute on Disability at University of New Hampshire. Our mission is to design, promote, and support NH’s Multi-Tiered System of Support for Behavioral Health and Wellness to improve educational outcomes for all children and youth.

What are Multi-Tiered Systems of Support for Behavioral Health & Wellness (MTSS-B)?

MTSS-B Framework
[Adapted from Response to Intervention: Policy Considerations and Implementation (Batsche, et al 2005)]
MTSS-B is an evidence-based, tiered method of instruction that addresses students’ social and emotional needs in the classroom, setting them up for academic success through group and individual interventions. Under the framework, there are three tiers: the first, which provides instruction to all students; the second, which provides secondary interventions to a subset of students that have similar experiences (i.e., divorce, grief, testing anxiety, etc); and the third, which addresses individual student needs through intensive interventions.

Under Tier 1 “Universal” supports, all students receive core instruction for social and emotional learning through the general education program. This could include morning meetings with the whole classroom, or class activities or lessons that focus on issues like bullying or conflict resolution, as well as small-group instruction that meets the needs of individual students.

Why teach social and emotional learning?

Teaching children how to recognize and understand their emotions, make decisions, and maintain relationships has immediate and lasting impacts on their mental health, academic achievement, and social skills. The Tier 1 supports are the first steps for schools and classrooms to create equitable, inclusive learning environments that are engaging for all students.
