The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) has put up a new web page about New Hampshire’s approach to competency-based learning.  It features a great video about Pittsfield Middle High School.  At one point, superintendent John Freeman describes the community-wide effort to identify the type of education they wanted for their children:

It really began in 2008… and we knew the school was a disappointment for the community. So we spent a great deal of time prompting folks to tell us what they wanted from the school and we heard that folks wanted schools to be personalized, they wanted their deficits to be understood and addressed and they wanted their strengths and passions to be encouraged.
