Olivia Freud: “The performance assessments always have a big impact on my learning.”

“As a 10th grader, the performance tasks I have experienced so far this year are a Socratic seminar, an enzyme lab, and a timed writing. My experience for all three tasks was positive. They are a lot more involved than a standardized test would have been and I had to […]

Mitch Greany: “PACE allows students to be creative, expand their thinking, and even have more fun with it.”

“I’ve done two PACE assessments so far.  In English Language Arts last year we learned about the Vietnam War draft and then we each wrote to Lyndon B. Johnson expressing our views in our own way.  In this year’s science assessment, four of us worked on a science lab about lizards. We […]

Meaghan Kalinowski: “Performance assessment puts the focus on real life skills rather than tedious classroom procedures.”

“In place of a chemistry final, we worked with a partner to determine how to neutralize a “chemical spill” that occurred outside of the school. I was very nervous. I’m usually better at a test type of assessment. This was also one of the more complex labs we had. In […]

“Instead a multiple-choice test, we were given a realistic hands-on activity that applied to skills we learned throughout the year. We analyzed the data, looked for patterns and drew conclusions about them. Our task was to log data on the lizard populations and then then write a short paper to […]

Katy Osterholz: “We were able to be independent and collaborative in the same lab, which is such an important part of learning.”

Katy Osterholz: “We were able to be independent and collaborative in the same lab, which is such an important part of learning.”

“Instead of a traditional, bland, multiple-choice test we did an interactive and collaborative lab about lizards and natural selection. We actually performed the lab with the others in our group. That was refreshing since collaboration is not a normal part of standardized testing. Then, we wrote an individual report on […]

Kevin O’Brien: “The performance task is a new way of testing.”

“The performance task, or PACE task, is a new way of testing. While you work in a group setting to collect data, observations and inferences, you still have to complete the final assessment individually (the written paper). The hard part that really pushes the student to think is: What do those things mean? “It showed me that in a group setting those who are able to collaborate and contribute can help with that first step of data collection and documentation but it’s ultimately up to each student to assesses what it all means and start to draw and reflect on conclusions.” -Kevin O’Brien, Junior, Souhegan High School

Elizabeth Apple: “The performance assessment made me feel like a scientist, a feeling I had never felt before in any science class – ever.”

Elizabeth Apple: “The performance assessment made me feel like a scientist, a feeling I had never felt before in any science class – ever.”

“Using performance assessments was easy. There were aspects of each assignment that were more challenging than the others, but it was never overwhelming.  Our Enzyme Lab, for instance, required each team member to be responsible for our own contribution. I didn’t want to let anyone else down so I got […]

Junior Kevin O’Brien: “The performance task, or PACE task, is a new way of testing.”

The performance task, or PACE task, is a new way of testing. While you work in a group to collect data, observations and inferences, you still have to complete the final assessment individually (the written paper). The hard part that really pushes you to think is, “What do those things […]

“It’s just like when you graduate and are doing a project for your boss. You’re going to have to show him, “Here’s what I did – and here’s why I did it.” Chase Brisson, Freshman, Sanborn Regional High School

“We should do more projects like this. I like that you can prepare, but you never really know exactly what’s going to happen. You have to know the information and use it on the spot.” Jazmin Alvarado, Freshman, Sanborn Regional High School
