Goffstown resident: Public Schools First

Goffstown resident Jo Ann McCalister submitted this letter to the Union Leader:

To the Editor: The New Hampshire Legislature and the citizens of our state have a responsibility to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and appropriate opportunity to obtain high quality education. That is the law. “All children” should include those children who are mentally, physically, and financially impoverished or handicapped.

Equal is the point. Until New Hampshire, with taxpayer dollars, provides appropriate education in the public school system for every child residing in New Hampshire, we cannot afford to issue vouchers for other educational entities. If schools are failing, they need more support from the taxpayer, not less, to bring them up to standard.

Those who desire other educational opportunities for their children are certainly free to do so with their own private funds.
