"Teachers, attorneys, business leaders launch education group"–Washington Times/AP

The Washington Times featured an Associated Press piece highlighting the bipartisan nature of Reaching Higher:

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – A non-partisan group of political, business and education leaders hope to have a say in guiding the state’s education policy through a new non-profit.

Reaching Higher New Hampshire is a newly formed group co-chaired by attorneys Tom Rath, a former Republican attorney general, and Alan Reische, an active Democrat. The group’s members say they hope to be a resource for lawmakers and focus on policy-heavy discussions about the future of public education in the state.

The group has yet to back specific policy proposals, but is calling for more access to pre-kindergarten and early childhood education programs as well as a stronger focus on preparing students for available jobs in the science, technology, engineering and math fields.

The group’s board includes teachers, school board members, political leaders and business people…..

The group says it plans to support “rigorous English, math and science standards,” although it does not specifically mention the controversial Common Core education standards, which are currently in place in New Hampshire. Its members are also calling for a “sensible system of accountability” that doesn’t over-test students.
